Cape Town: one day out, three ways to reach the penguins.
Boulders Beach holds an African penguin colony you can stand beside on a raised boardwalk, and every operator in the city gets there. What differs is whether the day also loops Cape Point, how early the minibus leaves, and how many people share it.
South Africa and Australia carry the penguins. Iceland has the cliffs.
Six countries where a bird tour is a whole day out rather than an hour in a park. The colonies, the lagoons, and the boats that reach them.
Penguins are the easiest bird in the world to book badly.
Eighteen species across four continents, and a colony that stands half empty if you pick the wrong month. These are the trips travellers rate highest, from the Cape boardwalk to the king colonies at the bottom of Argentina.
The bird tours more travellers take than any others.

Australia: the penguins come ashore after dark, and the seating is tiered.
Phillip Island runs its parade on a timetable set by the birds, not the operator. General viewing puts you on a concrete bank with several hundred people. The small platforms and the underground box cost more and put you at beak height.

Half of birding is a calendar. The colony is either there or it is not.
Puffins hold the Icelandic ledges from roughly May to the first week of August, then leave for open ocean within days. African penguins moult through late summer and spend it standing about looking wretched. Flamingos follow water, so a lagoon that was pink in March can be bare gravel by July. Ask the operator what is on the cliff this week, and take the first departure: wind gets up by mid-morning and small boats turn back.

What a day with the birds actually costs.
Every priced tour on the site, grouped by what one person pays. Plenty of the best mornings come in under the price of dinner.
Sanctuary and park entry, an hour on a lagoon, the half-day run out to a colony.
The standard full day: Cape Point and Boulders, a Reykjavik puffin cruise, the Phillip Island evening.
Three bird spectacles that happen nowhere else.
Aviaries are everywhere. A colony of wild penguins twenty minutes from a city beach, a cliff face stacked with breeding puffins, and a lagoon that turns pink on the tide are not.

Boulders Beach, in person
Around three thousand African penguins nest in the dune scrub behind a suburban beach at Simon’s Town, and a raised boardwalk runs straight through the middle of the colony. They are loud, they smell of fish, and they are close enough that you hear the chicks under the bushes. The species has lost most of its world population inside a single human lifetime, which is the other reason to go now.

The puffin ledges
Puffins spend most of the year far out on open water and come ashore only to breed, packing the turf-topped cliffs of Iceland, the Westman Islands and the Farnes for a few short weeks. They land badly, they carry sand eels crosswise in the beak, and by the second week of August the ledges are empty again.

Flamingos on the turn of the tide
Flamingos need shallow brine and very little else, so they show up in salt pans, soda lakes and mangrove lagoons from the Algarve to the Yucatan. The colour comes from what they filter out of the water, which is why a Kenyan bird burns brighter than a European one, and why the whole flock moves the moment the water does.
